As animals get larger, their weight (which is related to their volume) increases proportionally as the third power of their height (it could also be their length, the idea being, whatever linear measurement you take to determine how large they are) but the surface area of their feet only increases in proportion to the square of the length (or diameter) of the foot. As a result, larger animals require proportionally larger feet.
