Green nails are actually the result of a Pseudomonas Bacterial Infection. Understand that even though this type of infection can be difficult to get rid of, it is fairly simple to alleviate on the nail plate.
If the nail is soft and has darkened to a deep green to black color, you should see a physician as soon as posible. do not use any nail make up unles you have the all clear from the doctor.
The yellowing of nails on fingers or toes is usually caused by a fungal infection.
In severe cases, a visit to a doctor or podiatrist may be in order, and they may prescribe medications in prescription strength formulations. These may be the most effective.
An Over-the-Counter remedy for nail or foot fungus can be used. Many different kinds are sold. There are topical creams and sprays.
Alternative remedies might include:
1) Tea Tree Oil which sinks into the skin and under & over the nail and ostensibly kills the fungus.
2) In the shower, urinating on the nails, or soaking them in a cup of urine for 10 minutes, the urine ostensibly kills the fungus. This has also been a technique used to kill the fungus that causes athlete's foot in general ( I think it's the same fungus just not under the nails in this case). This method is taught to and used by elite military units for use in remote or hostile territory when medications are not available. The idea here is that the acidity and ammonia content in the urine can kill the fungal infection. In any case, this soak is followed by thorough washing with soap and rinsing with water.
3) soaking the nails in 1% bleach solution, but this is not to be combined with the urine approach since combining bleach & ammonia can make you fatally ill and damage your lungs and brain among other things.
These remedies are not proven.
In some cases the fungus can be deeply ingrained in the nail and/or surrounding tissues and be nearly impossible to kill without going to extreme measures to remove pieces of nail and skin and soak the area with antifungal medication. This is why many people give credence to the Tea Tree Oil method, since it is purported to have the ability to soak through the surface and into tissues and nail beds, killing all of the fungus wherever it hides.
