The arm-bands are miniature playbooks. They have the name of certain plays and the specific instructions for the player's position. This keeps the players from having to memorize hundreds upon hundreds of plays, and gives them a cheat-sheet if they forget something.

This is simply a fashion trend, according to the NY Times. There is no real medical benefit derived from it.

Exactly what this poster said, it's only a fashion statement, the amount of compression you would need can't be provided by a little rubber strip. If you notice they're almost always Nike or Under Armor, so it's another place to advertise really.

I disagree with the two previous posters. I believe its similar to soccer players wrapping just below the knee. It stabilizes the tendon running down the front of your knee, and prevents pain from running. It does not actually take much pressure to do this, which most people do not realize.

The band above the arm (when its a type of wrap, not a sweat band) can help prevent stretching ligaments in your elbow that are easily injured when you hit the ground.

Some believe that the elbow straps are purely cosmetic and have no true purpose, but it is hard to believe that the NFL would allow its players to wear any on field equipment with no purpose. I lean towards the believe that the straps help with tendinitis of the elbow.

What is the purpose of the tight narrow bands often worn on the arms above the elbows by and pro football players?

Those narrow straps are to prevent tendinopathy. By taking some of the load off the muscles and tendons near their attachment points they reduce the likelihood of tearing, particularly of the triceps tendon when falling on the hands. Physical therapists give these to the players to prevent lateral and medial epicondylitis and outright rupture injury and keep them in the game with less pain.

What are the arm bands on football players arms for?

The captain wears an arm band to denote that he is the captain.Answer: Bands that are worn the wrist are for sweating, however most all football players, tennis players etc; will wear tight bands around their elbows because the tendons of the elbow slowly and painfully begin to pull away from the bone of the elbow during stress. This is where the pain in your elbow originates. With continued repetitive use of the elbow, the tendon-bone connection continues to weaken and the pain in your elbow steadily increases. By placing continual pressure on the tendons connecting the Flexor and the Extensor muscles to the Medial and Lateral Epicondyles, thus significantly reducing the tension at the point of connection to the bone.Note: Click the "related" link below to a New York Timesarticle to see that not only is the use of these armbands deemed useless by members of the medical profession, but even football players themselves are quoted saying the armbands are merely fashion.
