Why do gangsters do graffiti?

Gangs have their own symbols, as I'm sure you're aware. And these gangs mark graffiti with them for two main reasons. One reason is to tag their turf, or mark territory as theirs. The other main reason is to scare civilians and other people in the area that the gang is present and they should be scared and leave them alone.

Gangs did not start graffiti. Graffiti, in the sense of damaging writing on a public space, goes back at least as far as the Romans and the ancient Greeks with, for example, the equivalent of 'I was here' scratched into stones on Hadrian's Wall in England, and in numerous other ancient buildings.

Sprayed graffiti is obviously much more recent, the aerosol spray having been invented in 1949, but there is no evidence to suggest that its use in graffiti was started with gangs. In the 1960s, for example, aerosol graffiti was typically used to produce political or cultural messages, although it was also used by gangs to mark territory.
