It is called "the pecking order" Chickens establish a dominance about who eats the best things and where they sleep or roost. The biggest & toughest hen gets to be the "alpha" and the fighting occurs when one hen decides she wants to be "the boss" of another and it is decided by fighting.

some times being the first season does make a difference but the hen may not be done laying all that she will lay in most instances hens will not "sit" untill they have layed all they are going to lay. Also hens like to be nested. I have nesting boxes for my hens or I have even used a five gallon bucket turned upside down with a "U" shape cut in it, this makes the hen feel more secure for herself and your eggs. And some hens just flat out arent good at sitting.
