Cats have hook-shaped bristles on their tongues. These are called papillae. These bristles are mostly used for grooming and eating. The roughness removes dead, loose skin, hair and any parasites in the fur when grooming, which is then swallowed and dissolved in the cat's stomach.
These bristles also help with food. In the wild, cats use these bristles for holding down prey, or a chunk of flesh ready to be chewed into bite-sized pieces. Just as a cat's tongue can remove skin and hair from grooming, this can be used on prey that has long or thick hair.

∙ 12y agoHumans do not have hair on their tongues. Humans and other mammals only grow hair from skin (epidermis) - the tissue on your tongue is not skin. Humans have hair of varying types growing from all skin except the palms of the hand, soles of the feet, lips, and eyelids. Your tongue is covered in mucous membranes, not skin. The top is covered in projections from this membrane called papillae, which contain taste buds and serous glands (which secrete some of the fluid in saliva.) But no hair.
