Immigrants who come to the US who gain weight most likely do because of a change in diet. The food in America is not exactly healthy all the time, and it is actually becoming more expensive to eat a healthy diet than to go to McDonalds for lunch. At my school I have seen it a number of times when foreign exchange students gain a lot of weight in just 1 year in America. They have told me that it is because of all the fast food. They say that they had never eaten so much fast food in their life. So, I think that immigrants to the US gain weight because they were not raised with such a bad diet, so they are not used to it.

High fructose corn syrup is added to nearly everything we eat. It has no food value and is added as a sweetener and to bulk up food items so the consumer thinks he is getting more for his money. The body does not recognize HFCS and stores it as FAT.

Answer: Probably because they're poor and can only afford low-quality, inexpensive, salty food which usually has a long shelf life. Canned foods such as soup, spagetti with tomato sauce, stews, and most frozen foods, cause weight gain and fatigue because the salt holds so much water in the body.
