They die. They don't get enough nutrients or water to survive, and the climate is too cold. But when they start getting water, they are back to normal. Leaves are the things trees produce, so went he trees die, so do they.

A plant will abscise a part either to discard a member that is no longer necessary, such as a leaf during autumn, or a flower following fertilisation, or for the purposes of reproduction. Most deciduous plants drop their leaves by abscission before winter, while evergreen plants continuously abscise their leaves

Leaves have a limited life. Ultraviolet light breaks down chlorophyll in the leaves over time, and insects, hail and even wind also take their toll. Winter, with its lower light levels and cold temperatures, is when deciduous trees go dormant and drop their leaves.

There is an abscission layer at the base of every leaf's petiole (the scientific name for the stem that attaches the leaf to the branch). The abscission layer is where the cells line up evenly, where a clean break from the tree can be achieved. In the fall, the shorter days trigger a chemical that causes the petiole to break free from the tree, drifting down to the ground.

Leaves fall off trees in the fall and winter because in this period of time, the sun is out for a shorter time. Leaves use the sun's energy to make food for the tree. Without food to grow, the leaves eventually fall off and leave the tree bear.

leaves fall out of trees because it is too cold for the trees to grow and be healthy. they do not get sunlight; and you know that trees need sunlight to live and grow, so the leaves fall out. but they need sunlight to MAKE SUGAR..so they eventually gome back and grow in the spring

Leaves fall of trees during winter because it reduced sunlight it keeps them from producing much energy. As a result, trees shed their leaves during the winter to save energy. Leaves gradually lose their color and then fall off as weather gets colder and days become shorter.
