Light bends towards the normal when it touches glass or water because the light travels from optically rarer medium to optically denser medium. Here, air is optically rarer medium and water or glass is optically denser medium. Light slows down in the denser medium. As one end of the wave front hits the interface before the other, we get a turning effect, just as when people march in a line abreast the line will bend if the people at one end slow down.

If light travels straight through a glass of water, it slows down. If light travels through a glass of water of an angle, the light that hits the closer edge will slow down sooner than the light that hits the further edge. This causes the light to bend in the direction of the closer edge. Imagine a troop of soldiers marching in formation. If they hit a patch of rough terrain, the soldiers will slow down. If they hit the rough terrain at an angle, and they only slow down when the hit rough terrain, then the soldiers will change direction, because some are slowing down, and some aren't.

Refraction is related to the fact that light has a different speed in different media (in this case, air and water). The more detailed explanation requires an understanding of the Huygens-Fresnel principle. Check the corresponding Wikipedia article if you want more details.

That is related to the fact that light moves slower in glass or water. You can find some details in the Wikipedia article on "refraction".

Does light bend as it passes through materials?

Light is affected by the media that it travels through. Even air will bend light. Glass and water certainly bend light.

Why does the light bend as it passes from air to glass or from glass to air?

This is due to the difference in optical density.

What happens when light is refracted through water from air?

The light will bend as it passes through.

Why would a wave bend when it passes from air into water?

The speed of light slows in water.

When light passes through substances such as glass or water it slows down and appears to bend what is this called?

This is called 'slowing down' and 'refraction'. They're not only apparent, they're real.

What happens when light goes from water to air?

light rays bend away from normal as it passes from denser water to rarer air

How does light bend without any source?

It bends in water or a magnifying glass.

Why does a straw appear to be bent in a glass of water?

This is due to the principle of refraction. Refraction occurs at the boundary of the two media air and water. When a light ray hits this boundary at an angle, it changes direction and seems to bend. So. the straw appear bent when we look at it through the water glass because light is being bent as it passes through the different media of air, water, and the glass.
