Historically a man was always in a better financial position than his wife and he required the help of his wife to maintain that position. He could get employment that paid better than the customary employment available for a woman and even for the same job he would be paid more. It was/is common for a wife to help her husband get an education in order to better support the family. Historically she took on all the responsibilities for caring for the home and children, even if she also worked. It was/is not uncommon for a man to divorce that hardworking first wife and marry someone more attractive and younger once he is well settled in his profession.
Since women bear children that makes them vulnerable to needing financial support from their husbands even after the children are born. Spousal support was/is was intended to assist her in maintaining some quality of life in recognition of her service to her husband and in fairness to her contributions. Spousal support was always more of an issue with couples on a higher economic level who have the resources to negotiate a settlement and afford good legal representation.
Times have changed. Although the wealthier couples can still afford good legal representation to draft beneficial divorce settlements it is no longer as common for judge's to order spousal support. If they do it is for a set period of time to enable the wife to get some education and job training so that she can eventually support herself. In rendering decisions in contested divorces a judge will consider such factors as the contributions to the marriage and marital property, the ability of the parties to acquire assets in the future, the educational levels of the parties, their professional abilities, etc.
Most women do not get any spousal support. The support they usually receive is child support.
