Size has a body language message of dominance and power. Many animals exhibit a posture that makes them look bigger if they want to look more threatening or more powerful. A good example is the bearded dragon lizard that expands its throat region to look bigger when confronted. It may be possible that men, psychologically, feel more comfortable when they are less threatened, and that could be why they prefer shorter women.
