Pacing is not a normal behaviour seen in content and stimulated dogs. If your dog is showing this behaviour, it may be because it is not getting sufficient exercise and is bored. You should consult your veterinarian if the behaviour persists.

If you're talking about caged animals - such as in zoo or circus exhibits - it's a sign of stress ! They are fully aware that they are held captive - and exhibit pacing as a sign of distress.
