People started eating popcorn at movies during the Great Depression, because it was cheap and easy to make. I guess it's a sort of tradition and Americans have acquired the taste after a while.

No, that isn't the real reason, I think that it's because popcorn has such a flavor that isn't too salty or too sweet, plus it isn't that hard to make and it just is sort of a movie-watching tradition. You wouldn't eat spaghetti at the movies, now would you?
