Best Answer

People have family names so that people with the same personal name who live or work near each other can be readily distinguished from each other in conversation.

Family names also help people take pride in their family relationship with a famous, learned, or wealthy person and increase their social status as a result.

They also have family names so that the government can more easily track them for purposes of tax collection and civil and military service.

If we didn't have family names for example we would only be known as Daniel so it would make the world more complicated.
