It is the image that people have developed, mainly because young opossums (not possums) will use their partly prehensile tails to hang upside down. Adult possums and opossums cannot do this, as their weight is too great.
Myths like this develop out of misinformation that becomes exaggerated. One may ask: Why do people think koalas are bears? Why do people think a platypus's bill is like a duck's? Why do people think kangaroos are a common sight in Australian cities?

Possums actually do not hang upside down. Why? Let's see. 1) adults can't because they weigh too much and their tails can't support them. 2) babies could, but there's absolutely no point to it 3) the blood would rush to their heads and, unlike bats, their circulatory system is not developed enough to deal with this
