people wanted phones so they could communicate with others. before phones people had to communicate with mail which took weeks, months, or even years depending were the person lived. that was hard for people, so they wanted phone so they can communicate right away

Or, maybe because they have an extremely limited perception of the millions of inventions that enabled humans to even conceive of the telephone.
For example, without a microphone you couldn't have a telephone.
Without electronics, you couldn't have a solid-state microphone.
Without semiconductors you couldn't have electronics.
and so on...
So, in theory, the "greatest" invention would have to be one of those that allowed us to invent all the rest of them.
