people wanted phones so they could communicate with others. before phones people had to communicate with mail which took weeks, months, or even years depending were the person lived. that was hard for people, so they wanted phone so they can communicate right away

For example, without a microphone you couldn't have a telephone.
Without electronics, you couldn't have a solid-state microphone.
Without semiconductors you couldn't have electronics.

So, in theory, the "greatest" invention would have to be one of those that allowed us to invent all the rest of them.

Before the Television people had to wait for several weeks for information about the government to come to them. After the Television to be invented people could get informed faster and easier. This invention also changed the way people socialized with other people. Before the Television's invention people went out from their homes to talk to other people because they didn't had anything else to do. After the Television's invention people stayed in their rooms to watch the TV.
