Green is the colour of the shamrock, the national symbol of Ireland. Also, it is said that Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish, so the shamrock as a symbol is also very much connected to Saint Patrick himself. Because the shamrock is green, green is the colour of Ireland and of Saint patrick's Day and so people wear green that day.
