Carbon dioxide is one of the ingredients that plants need, along with water, to make sugar:

6CO2 + 6H20 --------> C6H1206 + 602

Carbon Dioxide + Water -------> Sugar and oxygen

Plants need carbon dioxide to make sugar just like you need flour to make a cake.

The photosynthesis equation is:

6 CO2 + 6 H20 -------------> C6H12O6 + 6 02

The plant takes in six carbon dioxide molecules and 6 water molecules through its stomata. Using energy from the sun, it turns the molecules in sugar molecules and 6 oxygen molecules.

CO2 = carbon dioxide

H20 = water

-----> = sun's energy

C6H12O6 = sugar

O2 = oxygen

Hope this helped some!

Carbon dioxide is needed so that photosynthesis could take place. Photosynthesis is the process of food being created for the plants. Carbon dioxide is needed along with water, sunlight, and oxygen. Only some plants really need soil. You can grow an avocado or onion in just a glass of water with sunlight until it's too big for the glass/container.

Plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, which leads to the production of sugars, and eventually more complex molecules for use by the plant in growth and metabolism.

plants do not produce carbon dioxide, they produce oxygen

this is done because of photosynthesis (thats pretty much the reverse of respiration)

Why does the volume of air in the spirometer drop slowly over the first minute?

The person breathes in oxygen and breaths out carbondioxide back into the spirometre. Because the carbondioxide can become a saftey hazard, soda lime is placed in the spirometre to remove the carbondioxide, however the volume of carbondioxide is equal to the volume of oxygen, as the oxygen is not being replace, so removing the carbondioxide removes the oxygen as well, making the spirometre drop.
