The metal contacts inside very old electrical outlets had bumps which interlocked with the holes in the plug. This kept the plug from easily falling out of the outlet. Modern outlets are simply designed to have more friction.

Modern outlets have "bumps" or detents that serve this "locking" purpose.

Manufacturers of certain items may also use these holes as a lockout by attaching a label etc. through one of the holes.

For instance a warning label stating "WARNING! Before plugging in this device, be sure to ". Since the warning label must be removed to plug in the device, it is much more likely to be noticed and read than if it were on page 1 of the instructions.

How many types of gender?

Two, male and female. Connectors with prongs are called male gender and those with holes female gender plugs. When you push them together they slot into each other allowing signals or current to flow. There are even connectors which have both prongs and holes and these are called bi-gender connectors. Being an inncoent young man I cannot for the life of me understand how the names came about.

How do you remove a headlight assembly from a Pontiac Montana?

Open the hood and look at the top of the headlight assembly. There should be two catch heads that screw down onto flat prongs attached to the headlight assembly. once you unscrew them, the whole assembly should slide out of the housing. When you put it back, look at the outside edge of the assembly, there are two prongs that slide into holes in the framework of the body. Be sure to insert them into the holes, as they help hold the assembly in place.

What back support belt do you recommend?

The best weight lifting belts are the lever belts. They are easy to adjust based on your size and very easy to put on. The belts that use prongs as the buckle are also good but are very hard to put on because you want the belt to be as tight as possible and the prongs are hard to put in the holes.

How do you a remove sterio from 1990 Pontiac lemans?

My recollection is that there are four little holes; two at the right side and two at the left side. You need to stick a suitable sized wire into the holes and that will unlatch some metal prongs that hold the stereo in place. Then it should pull out.

Why do some people say you can't eat soup or other liquids with a fork?

Because it would just run through the prongs. A spoon has no holes so it would hold the soup or liquid.
