  • Molecular polarity results from inherent geometrical factors in a given combination of atoms. Let us consider water, the most common example of a polar molecule. There is an oxygen atom in the middle, attached to two hydrogen atoms. Why are these hydrogen atoms arranged at an approximately 120o angle to each other, creating a polar molecule, rather than at a 180o angle which would create a non-polar molecule? It's because the oxygen atom has a full outer shell of electrons, when it bonds to the hydrogen atoms, and that means eight electrons forming four pairs of electrons. These four pairs of electrons repel each other (as described by Coulomb's Law) and they therefore assume positions as far apart from each other as possible, which turns out to be the corners of a tetrahedron. The two hydrogen atoms each share one of the electron pairs, so they must go where the electrons go. But since they also have a positive nucleus, they create an unbalanced or polar electrical charge in the molecule.
