Once, long ago, there were only banner ads. And it was good. Much like reading the newspaper, the ads were static. With newspapers there's only so much you could do with the ads, so the ad makers soon realized that many more options were available for the internet. Pop-ups. Pop-unders. Blinking and rotating. A way to make sure you notice them. Most modern browsers(Firefox and IE) enable pop-up blocking from the start.
