I have a visiting racoon that has been eating grubs out of our lawn. She/he kept coming up on our porch and back deck using the dog's water bowl to wash her/his food off. Each time causing the water bowl to get filled with mud. So, we gave her/him it's own water bowl down off of the deck to use, and it worked. The bowl has dirt in it every morning, so we empty it and fill it with fresh water to use. It has kept the racoon from coming up on the porch and deck and even looking in our windows.
It was once believed that raccoons do not have adequate saliva production to moisten food thereby necessitating dousing in water, but this hypothesis is now considered to be incorrect. Captive raccoons douse their food more frequently when a watering hole with a layout similar to a stream is not farther away than 3 m (10 ft). The widely accepted theory is that dousing in captive raccoons is a fixed action pattern from the dabbling behavior performed when foraging at shores for aquatic foods. This is supported by the observation that aquatic foods are doused more frequently. Cleaning dirty food does not seem to be a reason for "washing."
In the wild, raccoons often dabble for underwater food near the shore-line. They then often pick up the food item with their front paws to examine it and rub the item, sometimes to remove unwanted parts. This gives the appearance of the raccoon "washing" the food.
A raccoon would repeatedly dip their food in water and roll it around. It was led to believe that a raccoon would "wash" their food before eating.
Raccoons don't wash their food because they want it clean. They get their food soggy or wet , so it will be easier for them to chew and swallow it.
Being adaptable pests (for example, digging through trash) and "washing" their food.
The Raccoon. It doesn't actually wash it's food and will eat dry food. It inspects its food closely with its paws resembling the appearance of washing. See the related link for more information.

A raccoon may leave his scat by your door because he lives near your house. It may be part of his habit or his path checking out trashcans and rummaging for garbage.
Raccoons are secondary consumers.

Yes, the raccoon uses its hands to search for food, to capture food, to eat food, to climb trees, to walk, etc.
There is no special significance except that the raccoon was either looking for food or shelter.

Raccoons eat anything even remotely edible - plant or animal - so it is unlikely a raccoon would be unable to find something to eat. They will scavenge trash bins for food and eat pet food if it is left outdoors.
This is a line from a poem, Raccoon Rex, about a raccoon. "Bounty" means treasure or good things. A brook is a stream or creek. The raccoon is taking its (stolen) food to the stream because raccoons always wash their food before they eat it.
