Because the people that hire them abuse them. Be wary of buying one.
Most rental companies do not rent vans, most of the rental companies only rent cars because cars are most profitable. Furthermore most of the customers only need a car and do not rent a van.

What I heard is that they don't want to deal with cars older than 3-4 years because they'll have to pay for repairs. Therefore, the only way to always have new cars is to sell the old ones. ** Rental companies must circulate 1-2 years to keep current with what the manufactures make. All rental compaies MUST purchase a certain amount of NEW manufactured cars- there fore they must get rid of the 'older ones' to dealerships to make room for that new stock. To re-coup the purchase costs, the sell the higher miles ones (typically 10-40k miles). (about 50-70% of cars you see at dealerships are purchased rental cars) As for 'not wanting to pay for repairs' .... rental companies DO make repairs. The ones they do not is if the total estimate of the damage exceeds the value of the car. -jsparkles
Pretty much any rental car company offers luxury car rental. You just have to specify what you want. I know Enterprise rents luxury cars, so you can just check with them. I'm not sure about any of the other places. Almost all car rental companies have a "luxury" category. Some even have "prestige" or specialty categories. There are companies, like Priority One Auto Rental in Boston,MA that only do luxury. Usually you can get a better selection of cars, and much better service, by going to a company that specializes in this area.
No major car rental companies are willing to rent to someone under the age of 21, although if you are under 25, you may be forced to pay a surcharge. Only New York and Michigan require car rental companies to rent cars to people as young as 18.
The only ones that exist are for rental properties. Homes and apartments. These companies will not cosign for a Loan.

Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Payless, National, and Thrifty are the only car rental companies allowed to pick up and drop off their customers at the different terminals. Customers of other car rental companies must take an airport shuttle bus to the Off-Airport Rental Car Terminal to meet their rental car companys shuttle.
