Seeds that grow near their parent plants compete with them for light, water, and nutrients. Since the parent plants are older and therefore have a more well developed root system, and a larger leaf area, they tend to have a head start and therefore the younger plants end up to not be able to provide enough light, water, and nutrients for themselves since the parent plant is able to obtain most of it.

Seeds that grow too near to their parent plants, have to compete with the parent plants for food, light and space. Seeds therefore need to be spread away from the parent plant if they are to avoid this competition, and grow into well developed and healthy new plants. The spreading around of plant seeds is commonly referred to as dispersal.Modes of Seed Dispersal:There are a number of modes or ways by which seeds may be dispersed, these include:Wind dispersalWater dispersalAnimal dispersalMechanical dispersal

Why should seeds be scattered away from the parent plant?

If the seeds only fell around the parent plant and germinated there, it would create overcrowded conditions. There would be too many plants competing for sunlight, and too many would die.yes many would die By the seeds dispersing further away from the plant, more stand a higher chance of survival.

What are some reasons why plants would be in a clumped spatial pattern?

Perhaps if one adult plant produced seeds which then sprouted w/out having a chance to be carried away by outside forces. This is where the expression "The apple never falls far from the tree" was started because seeds often grow near their parent plants. Some plants send up new plants from their roots, and those plants send up more, and so on.That's why those types need to be dug up and separated every few years.
