Probably because they are nervous. Both boys and girls can be uncertain when meeting new people, even more so when they are attracted to the person. Making a good first impression is important, but just be polite and friendly. You will find that the situation resolves itself one way or the other. Of course, if you are afraid to ruin the "dream" of having a relationship, you will never find out whether to pursue it or move on.
