it was illegal to teach slaves how to read.
yes
Slave codes in the 1700's prevented slaves from doing many things, four major ones are: SLAVE CODES: Can't own a weapon. Can't meet in large groups with other slaves. Can't leave plantation without permission from there masters. Colonists are not permitted to teach slaves how to read and write.
It was not against the "law", technically, to teach slaves to read. It was, however, against a certain etiquette followed by most slaveholders. This etiquette was known as the Slave Codes, which ensured that slaves would be treated as property as they were thought to be, instead of being treated like people. One rule of the Slave Codes was that slaves could not be taught to read, or it was rather suggested against the notion, because it was believed among many slaveholders that slaves taught to read or write would become intelligent and find a way to outsmart their masters. In short, it was all because of envy and greediness. :/ Hope it helped! Ari

Slave codes are strict rules of governing the behavior and punishment of enslaved Africans. Some codes did not allow slaves to leave the plantation without written permissions from the master. Some made it illegal to teach enslaved people to be literate (to read or write). Email me with questions! krhayner1101@gmail.com

Slaves were prohibited from acquiring any power through a series of actions. First of all, it was illegal to teach a slave to read. This made it extremely difficult to acquire information that could be used to assess their options. Secondly, Slave Codes gave masters absolute dominion over their slaves, including life and death. Finally, institutions such as the Supreme Court declared slaves were not citizens and only ⅗ the worth of a white man. In addition, they were considered â??propertyâ?? not human beings.
