Smokers cough because of the build up of tar in their lungs, and often if a smoker coughs and spits out, it will be browned colored from the tar. Also, inflammation occurs from the harsh smoke which can induce smoking from an irritated throat. This is a result from the pollution buildup in their lungs from smoking.
