Traditionally, the red bindi (or sindhur) was worn only by the married Hindu women, but now it has become a part of women's fashion. Traditionally, the red dot is made up of bovine blood and dirt (earth), however, even this has changed in that many women wear a jewel (authentic gemstone or otherwise).

The point between the eyebrows is known as the AJNA chakra and is one of the seven chakras in the body. It pertains to the states/emotions of attention and anger. The pituitary gland known as the king of the endocrine system (it controls all other endocrine glands in the body) lies exactly behind this point. The bindi/kumkum (which originally is made up of Haldi (turmeric) and Lime) or sandalwood paste resonates at a frequency which brings about harmony in the pituitary and hence the entire endocrine system in the person. Though bindis are today made up of plastic and gum (very harmful) they are actually used traditionally as tilaks by both men and women for the aforesaid purposes.

The Bindi, or the dot, has a deep spiritual meaning for Hindus that revolves around chakra and figuratively seeing with a third eye. Chakra is the belief that certain points on the body have a deeper spiritual purpose to them. The point in between the eyes is considered to be a focal point of concentration and understanding, hence the figurative third eye reference, to see what most do not. It revolves around the belief in being conscious of things that take deep spiritual focus.

It also can carry the idea of the center of the universe around us is at that point on the forehead that deals with concentration and meditation. It is a symbol for many, but for some the dot is actually believed to help them be able to see things clearly.
