A couple things cause this, young children are egocentric, they believe the world revolves around them so when something happens, good or bad it must result from something they did.
The other reason, and this involves children from a very young age, right up through teens. Raising children almost always involves stress, especially when the couple is not getting along. The child will hear parents arguing over events that involve the child, so he thinks that he is the cause of the arguing.
Parents need to sit the child down and explain to him that the marriage is ending but that does not mean he did anything to cause it, that the child is the best thing to come out of the marriage and that both parents will still be actively involved in his life. Then they need to follow through. The end of a marriage does not need to mean the end of the family.

Of the ones that do, some parents use blame as a way of deflecting responsibility away from themselves. By having the responsibility on someone else, it is not their responsibility to deal with it. Actually dealing with issues can be a lot of work, very emotionally straining, and life-changing in ways that the parents may not be able to deal with or don't think they will be able to deal with.
Blaming someone else may help them relieve some of the guilt they may feel.
Of course there are always the times where their kids might actually be responsible for something.
