Why do some professional baseball helmets look discolored or damaged?

Answer

Most often, it has to do with superstition. Some players will not have their helmets cleaned during the season. Which doesn't sound like a big deal, except that they're also handling the pine tar to improve their grip, which ends up making the helmet quite dirty after several games.

If the helmet is actually broken, it's not allowed to be used in the game.
