Some followers of ancient religions in the Middle East worshiped idols to the great offense of God. They had Ankhs and amulets that they believed actually had power in themselves, kind of like some people treat a rabbits foot in modern times. God's people would sometimes mingle with the customs of neighboring tribes and flirt with these unfaithful practices, as had been verified by modern archeological digs. God stated clearly in the ten commandments (followed by the major religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam) "I am the Lord your God and you shall have no gods before me".

Some have traced Islam to a cross pollinization of middle eastern stone worship with Judaism and Christianity. Thus they point to the stone in Mecca and Islam's obsession with the rock of Abraham's offering over which Solomon's temple was built and site of the current Mosque of the rock.

Though its start was likely in an environment of Idol worship, current Islam seems focused on the one true God and so would not be involved in worshiping idols.

Likewise, some enemies of Christianity have accused Christians of worshipping idols because they have statues and pictures. Neither are those idols since Christians by there own admission do not worship those things; they use them to lift their minds and hearts to God as they use song and other art for the same purpose.

Even though the major religions do not condone idol worship, Idol worship is alive and well in today's world. The Idols of money, power, self love, self-pleasure and self choice run rampant. Western culture has placed these ahead of God to the great detriment of individual human persons. People are lost, confused and millions of lives are sacrificed to these idols every year in the way of unborn human babies. So today religions don't worship idols, people do...unfortunately.

it is true that hindus believe in one almighty normally known as PARABRAHMA. it is necessary to understand what parabrahma is to know why hindus worship everything like idols, animals, planets etc.

the concept of parabrahma as in Hinduism is that Parambrahma is the only and one almighty and parambrahma is omnipresent. the concept of "everything is god" and "god is everything" allows people to worship any idols which they like.

See, in Sanathana Dharma the one almighty is Parabrahma. The Parabrahma is formless and also all the form is his. Now my question is can you image air in your mind. I hope no. Because it is formless. If you are told to imagine air, then you will think of some form for air. So no human being can think of something without of form. Hence to attain that formless Parabrahma, we use some form. That is the purpose of idols.
