All merchants do. they want to see what area you are in. Some survey to debate whether or not they should put a store up in your area. Others do it to send out mailers to advertise. you can tell them you do not want to give it to them.

∙ 14y agoThere are a number of reasons why a store would ask your ZIP code.
1. You are paying by credit card, and the credit card company wants to verify that you are the person the card was issued to. The billing address on the credit card account is known to the issuing bank's computers, but presumably a thief won't know your zip code. Your ZIP code isn't printed on the card anywhere.
2. The store is considering expanding, and wants to figure out if you have driven to the store from a ways off, or if you are local. If a lot of people are driving in from a distance to shop at this store, would it make sense for the store to open a branch in your area?
