Well, being a teen myself I'd say there are a lot of reasons.
1. They don't care about school.
2. They have to get a job to support themselves/family.
3. They were sick of getting up in the morning.
4. They would rather being doing something else; hang out with friends/party, etc.
5. They felt like school was a waste of time.
6. They didn't like being surrounded by social groups and all the peer pressure.
7. The felt they already knew everything they needed to know and the teachers were not teaching them what they really needed to know about living in the real world.
