There are two conflicting answers on the topic -

Theory 1: It is said that the jersey was chosen to be blue as a honor to the royal Savoia family of Italy. During the first two games that the officialy national team played, the players wore white shirts with their club team shorts, after which blue was chosen.

Theory 2 : For the first games that the Italian national team played, they used white jerseys, however, during one of the original matches that the national team played it began to snow, and they were unable to continue wearing white. The only other available jersey's were Blue. After changing jersey's to the Blue jerseys to finish the game (and winning that game) they wore Blue ever since.

As to which story is true, I have no idea, but I can say that Italians are supersticious enough to wear a Blue jersey for eternity just because they won in it the first time haha.

In addition Forzza Azzuri means "blue force" in Italian. It is the nickname of the Italian national soccer team because its uniform is blue.

Go Italy! Azzurri is the Italian national team.

Blue is the colour of the Savoia, which was the ruling house of Italy from 1861 until 1946. Until then, the country's flag always had the Savoy coat of arms on it.

It is only since the Italian Republic was established, post-war, that the Tricolor has been the national flag.

Why do Italian rugby players wear blue?

The color blue is used by the majority of Italy's sporting teams including their successful national soccer team, commonly known as the azzurri- meaning blue in Italian. The color is used by the teams as it was the color of the royal family that unified Italy. It is probably for this same reason that the Italian national rugby team adorn this color, as opposed to the green, white and red found in their national flag.
