It is theorized by Americans that this metaphor symbolises a depressive state: mushrooms are commonly grown in darker spaces, and closets are small cramped areas, hence the imagery is interpreted as simply acting openly "depressed" around other people.

Most types of mushroom grown commercially are grown for consumption as food. The common brown mushroom, shitake mushroom (japanese), portabella mushroom, and some types of truffles. Was it a mistake for us to enter world war 1?

No, because Japan and Germany and their less-powerful ally Italy were Fascist countries that wanted to conquer other countries and peoples and exterminate and enslave peoples that were not their race. Do some reading on how the Japanese treated those peoples they conquered and you can imagine just what the world would of been if Japan had won the war. The Japanese believed that whites and blacks and non-Japanese Asians were sub-humans that did not deserve to live or be treated justly and would rape, torture and kill non-Japanese races for sport. If the US had not entered the war the US might be under Japanese Fascism today.

Can you get a disease from magic mushrooms?

If improperly stored, fungus can grow in magics mushrooms (mushrooms themselves are a speciece(sp?) of fungus). However, magic mushrooms themselves do not cause any diseases, any other than getting a food infection from fungi that can grow on improperly stored magic mushrooms (which can also happen to normal mushrooms or any other type of fresh food).
