Dogs dont really howl at the moon, but it just works better when their heads are bent back in that position. It's a way of saying ''hey'' is there anybody out there who is part of my pack. Of course some just howl because they enjoy it.
That is a good question. Can someone help me find the answer? We think it is because the moon is so beautiful that they want to sing to it. It's wonderful, isn't it.

Not at the moon but werewolfs howl to express their feelings.
Coyotes are similar to wolves in many ways, but not the howl. Wolves have a clear, smooth howl, and coyotes have a whimper-like howl. When coyotes howl, they are barking and then let out a short howl, then keep doing high pitched howls.
All dogs can howl but mostly hounds are sopposed to.
Dogs typically howl when a particular tone is heard. Not all dogs will howl when church bells ring, some howl along with sirens, music on the radio, or in response to other dogs howling.
Dogs howl at sirens because of the high pitch the siren makes.
