The Egyptians mummified the dead because they believed the persons soul would leave the body at death and return. The soul needed to be able to recognize the body to live forever and therefore they used the mummification process.

Egyptians mummified their dead pharaohs/nobles bodies because believed that when a person passed away their "Ka" or life force/spirit left their body and lived in their resting place. So if King Tut's Ka left his body and his body was in a pyramid then King Tut would be living in a pyramid. That is why after the mummification process is complete people bring food, clothing jewelry and other things including treasure and other personal item s because they feel that the person's Ka will want to have that with them in their final resting place.
