The umbilical cord, which connects the placenta to the baby, needs to be cut so that the baby's blood supply can be secured within the baby's body, and the now dead placenta can be disposed of.

The umbilical cord, which contains one artery and one vein, should only remain attached until it has stopped pulsating, a matter of minutes. The blood in the cord is the baby's blood. Those few minutes while the blood is being added back into the baby's body benefits the baby and seems to help prevent a form of infantile anemia.

If the parent(s) have decided to save ("bank") the cord blood, a sufficient amount will remain in the cord for that purpose. The cord is cut so that the remaining cord is about 2 inches long. It will shrivel, die and eventually drop off, leaving a nicely healed "belly button," or umbilicus.

The umbilical cord separates from an infant by itself. Some parents may opt for "lotus birth", in which the entire cord is allowed to dry and separate naturally. Severance by medical personnel only speeds up the process.
