It is traditional etiquette to take your hat off in buildings, churches, courthouses and even restaurants. It is considered rude not to take your hat off to someone in authority such as a judge in a court. For some reason some women did not do this practice .... possibly because their hairdos and hats were held in place by hat pins and they could not readily take their hat off.
