The water that they swim in is very dirty. Hazardous water may contain dangerous chemicals and other waste products. It has a lot of germs and bacteria. All of the nasty odor builds up on the fish. It gets trapped inside of their fins and scales.

People often say that, "Fish doesn't smell when it's fresh." That is not true, this is the major factored caused by the condition of the water that they are living and swimming in.

The fish will start to smell bad if they are left out of the water for more than 12 hours. This is because the bacteria and odor on the fish is decaying which will create an unpleasant smell on the fish.

Fishe caught in canals, swamps, reservoirs and sloughs often smell bad.

Fishe caught in rivers, lakes and oceans shouldn't smell or smell bad unless if they swam or were transferred from the following locations above.

If you plan to cook and eat the fish, make sure you wash and clean the fish good!

It depends if you're talking about fish made to eat, or the ones you keep as pets.

If it's fish for food they only do if they aren't fresh or prepared correctly.

If it's the fish you keep as pets they only smell "fishy" if you don't clean the tank often enough. :)
