Because it's our life! It is where we live, we cannot survive without it. Everything we know and use comes out of the environment, e.g. food comes from crops and farming, clothes, water, shelter so therefore if we don't look after it, human life will simply be unable to exist. With global warming and pollution and other environmental problems, it is very important that we preserve the world we have left for future generations, so that humanity will be able to continue existing and thriving on this earth.

The environment is fundamentally connected to everything we need as human beings to survive. There is a reason there is no life whatsoever on the other planets in our solar system, and that is simply because their environments cannot sustain life.
If we disrupt the temperature balance and precipitation patterns of our current environment, it will make it more difficult to grow food leading to the starvation of millions more.
If we pollute our groundwater with chemicals, then we will be forced to drink chemicals and probably live much shorter lives.
If our air is polluted, we will be forced to breathe it all day every day, again leading to drastically shorter and much uglier lives. We waste trillions treating otherwise preventable respiratory illness.
Many studies have also linked pollution (ground or water) to a decrease in brain function; this would be exacerbated by poor nutrition brought on by less agricultural productivity.
Without green plants, there simply will not be oxygen to breathe.
The list goes on. We should not think of the environment as some poor wounded critter who needs to be taken care of. We are at the mercy of the environment to continuously provide us with clean air, clean water and good food. Time only moves forward and we have no where else to go; if we screw up just one time, there are no do-overs.
It's not about protecting other species. Personally I don't care if polar bears or tree frogs go extinct. The sole reason I am so passionate about the environment is because it IS so important to humanity's well being.
It is our choice to save the environment or destroy everything we have created over a period of a million years
