Each branch acts as a "check" on the powers of the other branches so that the powers of government are not consolidated in one person (King George III) or body (the House of Lords.) Legislation (laws, bills) comes from Congress, which is sent to the President who either accepts it as-is, returns it to Congress with recommended changes, or simply vetoes it (rejects it), then it goes back to Congress who can override the veto with two-thirds majority or make more changes/revisions and send back to the President for another round of the same activities until they agree; the Supreme Court then has the power of "judicial review" and will assess the legislation.
