Seriously, it is just a convention to help keep still, minimize distraction, and express humility. Some people also pray with their hands open and raised toward heaven as a gesture of acceptance. Some people say grace at the table with hands joined as an expression of community. I have been in church services too where every person holds the hand of another all around the church.
When you pray it's your Spirit in coming into the Presence that is important, not where your hands are.

∙ 14y agoYou know there is nothing in The Bible that says we should put our hands together to pray. We don't even have to close our eyes to pray either. All of that is just stereotypical of how to pray when it doesn't matter. However, I think when we do pray and end up putting our hands together it is a sign of respect.

It's a custom that people are taught from childhood. To do so, however, keeps your hands in plain sight, which would be comforting to someone next to you who might be suspicious of others. Also, the old religiously oriented Renaissance paintings that influenced modern society depict worshiping people with their hands steepled.
As stated above, however... the Bible doesn't mention the hands in worship or prayer. In fact:
"...God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that He is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; neither is WORSHIPPED WITH MEN'S HANDS, as though He needed any thing, seeing He giveth to all life, and breath, and all things..." (Acts 17:24-25).
"...True worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him." (John 4:23)
Any hand position is good for worshiping God. Hanging by one's hands, together or apart, by a rope would be an excellent time to worship, for instance.
