If you are refering to cow, calf and bull designations a large number of grazing animals have these names to show an animal's sex...perhaps in an attempt to have some uniformity or our lack of imagination.
Bears and hogs are similar...Boars and Sows...but the babies have different designations...cubs and piglets respectively.
