You study George Washington for two reasons. One is that you have to show up to class and do the work, creating some good habits. George Washington is part of the curriculum because he is a central historical figure from the beginning of the United States, not only because of his being the first president. Reading about him, you can get a picture of how people lived in his times, the food they ate, how they managed their workers, their marriages and their other affairs. If you read beyond the textbook, his was an interesting life.

Washington was a leader in the Independence movement. He risked his life and fortune to oppose a tyrannical king who was backed by a strong military. He commanded the Colonial army but also arranged to keep it supplied and keep up its morale. After the war ended he helped draw up the US Constitution which was truly remarkable and then make it work by serving as the first President.

He had the opportunity to make himself king and to set up the kind of Dictatorship that is so common in the world whenever a new strong man gets power, but he not only insisted on a Constitutional government but refused to accept more than two terms as president before stepping aside.
