A number of reasons; various illnesses, posture and sleeping position, dental reasons, etc.

Those who breathe by mouth during sleep, for whatever reason, are naturally much more prone to this (during sleep, you produce less saliva, but also swallow less frequently, and it can build up and trickle out the corner of the mouth if one sleeps with their head on its side). If you snore, you likely drool a bit too, but it may evaporate before you wake and you'll never be the wiser.

You drool when your mouth is open. The saliva in your mouth comes out through force of gravity. Some people sleep with their mouth open (the droolers) while some people don't (the non-droolers). There is no scientific evidence saying that you need to drool or that you do not need to drool. It just happens.

You can drool in your sleep because your muscles become so relaxed. This causes us not to swallow as often as when we are awake. This results in the pooled saliva drooling out of the mouth.

The simple explaination is we dream and then part of our brain wakes up, therefore signaling us to do whatever we want in our sleep.

There is no meaning to this experience, which is both common and normal. Perhaps the sleeper has a stuffy nose, and is breathing with the mouth open.
