What does it mean if you are being used?

You are being used when a person takes advantage of you. For example, when you have something somebody wants, they'll call you their friend just to have what you have or at least have a part of it until you don't have it anymore, and when you don't have it anymore, that's when you don't have that friend.

We are all "used" to some extent, now whether it's done maliciously or cruelly is a big difference, but if you think about it, we really are all used to some extent.

Our employers use us to get a "job" done, though we are paid in compensation for the task or job, it's still a from of being "used", not in a bad or hurtful way.

Partners in a relationship use each other in many ways, again not in a bad way, I use my partner for love, support, respect, just to name a few, he uses me for love, taking care of him and his needs, cooking, laundry, a form of being used.

Children use their parents as they are growing up for support, food, items for education, fun, and sustenance.

Doing it maliciously or cruelly makes a big difference, for example, if you are with a partner and you know you don't truly love this person or respect this person and you only stay with them because of what you can "get" out of the relationship, such as material things, then that is using someone cruelly. If you "date" someone only because that person buys you things, then that is using someone in a cruel way.

If you feel like you are being used, it is probably because you ARE being used.

Before you decide for sure, take a look at your situation. Are you the one who is always making the concessions, doing the giving, doing the listening? Does your partner always spend the money on him or her self? Does your partner expect you to listen to him or her, but act uninterested or walk off when you want to talk? Are you putting more into the relationship than your partner is? If the answers to any of those questions is yes, you could be being used. If the answer to more than one or two of those questions is yes, chances are good that you are being used.

If you are having sex with the person, do you go places together in public and are you treated with respect in front of others? If not, you are most likely being used for sex. Even if you are not outright being used for sex, a relationship in which you are not treated with respect is not worth being in.

The only smart thing to do if you are being used is to break off the relationship and move on. Being used only gets worse. The same goes if you are not being treated with respect.
