What ends up happening is that Most likely your Files our from another source like your CD's, lime wire. so the files are saved onto 1 folder,so when you add them to itunes "itunes" make a separate copy of the file,and adding it to the "itune Music" folder,thus you end up with 2 copys of the same song.You can Just uncheck that property,and it won't make a separate copy.
Alternately, if you're dealing with more copies, it might be Itunes trying to organize your music files. It makes three copies to organize itself better (although I've noticed no difference not having the extra copies.) You can prevent this by opening Itunes:
Go to Edit
Preferences
Advanced
Uncheck the box that says "Keep Itunes music folder organized."
Although this will be a moot point if you do not want Itunes to copy your files in the first place, as shown above.

∙ 14y agoFrom the iTunes file menu select Show Duplicates. This will list all duplicated files. If you are sure none of these are needed you can select them all (from the Edit menu), right click on the list and select Delete from the menu, or choose Delete from the Edit menu.
After showing duplicates, be sure to select the files you want from the "MUSIC" library then "DELETE", then "MOVE TO TRASH".
The same holds true for the various files in other libraries: "Movies", "TV Shows"...
Note that if you delete a file from a playlist vice library, the file will still exist in the library.
So, get it right this time or else you'll keep scratching your head and wondering "Hmmm, I know I deleted that. Or at least I thought I did..." and that's just bad for good mental well being and confidence.
