Answer

That's what happens when you eat too much turkey, mashed potatoes, beans, and gravy.

Answer

Scientists believe that the tryptophan in the turkey (an essential amino acid found in poultry) triggers sleepiness by increasing the levels of serotonin and/or melatonin in the brain.

It's also possible that the environment surrounding the dinner itself (spent in a cozy and trusting family environment, generally after a day of football, cooking and other activities) also lends itself to drifting to sleep.

Turkey contains tryptophan which enables serotonin production, which can convert to melatonin, which makes us sleepy.

It is believed tryptophan- a natural biochemical found in turkey, makes you sleepy.
But, the truth is that the amount of tryptophan is so small it would barely have an effect on you. Usually, the 'tired' feeling you get comes from overeating.
Blood rushes to your stomach to digest what has been eaten, leading to a decrease in energy. This is also referred to as a 'food coma.'

And on-the-lighter-side answer (or... an on the-heavier-side answer):
It's because you're stuffed.

Did Indians attend the first thanksgiving dinner?

No.Our view of the first Thanksgiving comes to us from the 1800's and when the history of the colonies were romanticized. It wasn't until 1860 that the holiday became official in the United States. The Pilgrims had a fast each year as part of their religion and when they broke the fast there was a big dinner. Somehow this became the "first Thanksgiving."

My husbands mother lives with us and we have been invited to my family's thanksgiving dinner should my family invite my mother-in-law too?

Yes, your parents should invite your mother-in-law to Thanksgiving dinner because she is part of the family. To leave her alone in your home while you go to your parents would be lonely and sad for your mother-in-law. Thanksgiving is to be thankful for the things we have and that includes family especially.
