The biggest reason you become drowsy after eating is that it takes energy to digest your food. The body redistributes some of the energy being produced to the gasteral area for digestion.

It has to do with the insulin level in your body, check out insulin resistant syndrom (IRS)

several possible reasons.

1- because your body is busy sending lots of blood and oxygen to your stomach to do the heavy duty work of digestion - so less blood and oxygen are available for your brain

2- the more heavy/stodgy/greasy the meal the worse you will feel; coz fat actually coats the blood, meaning it can't flow quite as quickly around the body

3- if you had any food intolerances this could make you more drowsy as your body tries to get them out of your system

The reason why you feel sleepy after a heavy meal is because the brain directs most of the energy towards digestion. Red blood cells are sent to the digestive system in order to break down food and while this is happening, the rest of the body takes a rest, inducing a feeling a sleepiness.

Your body uses it's energy to digest the food. It also wants you to stay calm, working with a full stomach feels awful. The process of digestion requires an extra amount of the body's blood supply to be diverted to the digestive system, and therefore there is less blood supply for the central nervous system. In other words, the body isn't really designed to do everything at once. If it concentrates on digestion, is has less resources for other things, therefore the easiest thing to do is to sleep while you are digesting food. This is only really noticeable when you eat a large amount of food. Smaller amounts are easier to digest and should not make you sleepy.

I'd imagine it is because your body is using energy to digest the food.
